Online Gambling in Spain Grows 21,63%: Betting, Spending, and Player Profiles in 2024

(Madrid).- The latest report from Spain’s Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ) reveals that the number of active online gamblers in Spain reached 1,991,550 users in 2024, marking an annual growth of 21.63% compared to the previous year. This growth confirms the continued rise of the online gambling sector, with sports betting and online casinos standing out as the most popular activities.

Profile of the Online Gambler in Spain

According to the report, 83.15% of online gamblers are men, while 16.85% are women. Furthermore, 85.70% of active players are between the ages of 18 and 45, confirming the strong engagement among young adults.

The average activity period is 5.74 months, and the monthly average of active players stands at 953,182. Notably, 21.91% of users are only active for one month or less.
 

Sports Betting Leads the Online Gambling Market

Among active players in 2024, 1,568,197 engaged in online betting, making it the most popular segment with an annual growth rate of 25.43%. It is followed by online casino games with a 29.23% increase, and online poker, which grew by 13.02%.

A total of 51.96% of users participated in only one gambling segment: 36.25% in sports betting, 11.37% in casino, 3.78% in poker, and 0.55% in bingo.
 

How Much Do Online Gamblers Spend?

The average net annual spending per active player was €706, equivalent to €58.82 per month or €13.57 per week. Spending varies significantly by gender and age:

Men: €740/year

Women: €538/year

Ages 46–55: €1,146/year (highest spending)

Ages 18–25: €299/year (lowest spending)

Around 21.25% of players recorded net winnings, and 5% earned more than €489 in net prizes during the year. Additionally, 35% of users had a net annual spending exceeding €147.
 

Deposits and Payment Methods in Online Gambling

The total value of deposits made by online gamblers rose to €4.568 billion in 2024, a 19.42% increase from the €3.826 billion in 2023. The number of deposit operations also grew, with a 20.41% increase over the same period.

As for the most commonly used payment methods:

Bank cards: 73.16%

E-wallets: 11.78%

This surge in deposit volume and transactions confirms the strong expansion of online gambling in Spain and highlights the consolidation of digital consumption and payment habits in the sector.
